Goldfish are one of the most hardiest fish you can keep, But can a goldfish live in a bowl?
A Goldfish can live in a bowl, but the lifespan of the goldfish will be greatly reduced due to the reduced water quality a bowl will provide. A Goldfish will thrive in well filtered water which you usually can not provide in a bowl.
If you do plan to keep your goldfish in a bowl there are a few things you will need to do which I will cover below.
How To Take Care Of A Goldfish In A Bowl
Goldfish produce a lot of waste so it is important to frequently clean the bowl they are living in. I recommend that you have two bowls so you can clean one bowl then transfer the fish to the other bowl once it has been fully cleaned.
Oxygen is usually a major issue in a bowl. Bowls are usually to small to have an air pump so we need to help oxygenate the water in other ways. Adding a plant to the water is one of the best ways to oxygenate the water.
Add A Filter. The best thing you can do is add a filter to your fish bowl. On Amazon you can buy special small filters which will fit in most bowls. Check them out here
Don’t Over Feed Your Goldfish. If there is left over food it will rot and severely reduce the water quality in the bowl. If you do not have a filter (Most bowls do not) this can be very harmful for your fish.
Water Changes. It is recommended to change 25% – 50% of the water every few days, This will help to remove the rotting food and fish waste from the bowl.
Add Conditioner To The Tap Water. If you plan to add tap water to your bowl you will need to add conditioner to the water as this will make the water safe for the goldfish (For more information about this check out this article I wrote)
You can buy water conditioners on amazon
How To Clean A Goldfish Bowl
You will need to clean the bowl once a week by doing the following.
- Transfer the fish to another bowl
- Remove everything from inside the bowl
- Remove 50% of the water
- Wipe the inside of the bowl with a cloth
- Clean any ornaments and gravel under the tap
- Place ornaments and gravel back in the bowl
- Fill bowl with water
- Add water conditioner
- Wait 2 hours before adding your fish back in
What Is The Expected Lifespan Of A Goldfish That Is Kept In a Bowl?
If you keep a goldfish in a bowl the average lifespan will be around 3 years. It is recommended to keep Goldfish in larger tanks with a filter and air pump where they will thrive.
Typically bowls will not have a filter or air pump and this will cause the water conditions to reduce in quality which will affect the lifespan of the fish.
Can Goldfish Live In A Bowl Without A Filter?
A Goldfish can live in a bowl without a filter but its lifespan will be greatly reduced. Goldfish produce a lot of waste so ideally a filter is needed to remove this waste from the water.
If your fish does not eat all the food you give them the food will most likely rot in the tank. This is why it is very important to make regular water changes, especially if you do not have a filter.
You can buy small filters that fit in to bowls nicely from Amazon, I highly recommend to purchase one if you intend to keep your goldfish in a bowl.
Can Goldfish Live in a Bowl With a Plant?
Goldfish can live in a bowl with a plant, in fact it is highly recommended to keep a plant in the bowl as it will add oxygen to the water and will help to reduce algae and bacteria growth in the bowl.
Adding a plant to the bowl will also brighten up the bowl and will not look so bland.
It is important to select a plant that will not grow to large and will grow quick enough that it wont get eaten away
I recommended the following plants to keep in your bowl
- Amazon Sword
- Java Fern
- Water Sprite
- Water Wisteria
Can Goldfish Live in a Bowl Without Oxygen?
A Goldfish can live in a bowl with no oxygen but its lifespan will be greatly reduced. It is recommended to change 25% – 50% of the bowls water every few days to introduce oxygen back in to the bowl.
Adding a plant to the bowl will also help to add oxygen to the water and will also help to filter the water.
The best way to add oxygen to the water is to add an air pump to the bowl.
How Long Can Goldfish Survive Without an Air Pump? A goldfish will survive about 4-5 days in a bowl with no air pump or plants to add oxygen to the water.
How Many Goldfish Can You Keep in a Bowl?
You should not keep more than 1 goldfish in a bowl. Goldfish require large tanks to live in as this will help them to thrive, But goldfish are very hardy and will be able to survive in small bowls.
Keeping the fish in a smaller tank will reduce their growth rate as well as their life span.

Where Should I Place My Goldfish Bowl? You should put the bowl in a place that will get a lot of natural light during the day but not in direct sun light. Sun light will cause algae growth in your bowl
